Boolean searching is an indispensable skill you should not overlook when trying to find more prospects or contact information such as emails or phone numbers. A boolean search streamlines your search results allowing you to find prospects faster than ever before. The first step to utilizing this powerful tool is to familiarize yourself with the keywords you will use.

Boolean Operator Usage
site: Search within a specific site. Example: site:"linkedin.com"
inurl: Match your search term to a word in the website URL. Example: inurl:"resume"
intitle: Match the page title to your search word. Example: intitle:"find more prospects"
filetype: Search for a specific file type. Example: filetype:("doc" OR "pdf")
“ “ Search for the specific word in the quotes. Example: "Emails"
( ) Group your words to ensure proper order of operations. Example: ("owner" AND "selling")
NOT or - Do not include results with a certain word. Example: -"employee" Note, when using Google use - instead of NOT.
OR Have one or the other word included. OR takes precedence over AND as per order of operations. Example: “Owner” OR "CTO" OR “Investor”
AND Include all of these words in search results. Example: Search for "Elon Musk" AND "Email"

With the keywords out of the way, let's try some searches! Let's say you want to find someone that is currently a CEO, founder or owner in San Francisco. We can combine LinkedIn's search filters with our own boolean search string to accomplish this. Using the search filter on LinkedIn you can specify a location, and using the following boolean search string ("Owner" OR "Founder" OR "CEO") we can get back just the results we are looking for.

Find Even More Prospects with Google!

Sometimes LinkedIn does not cut it and you need more leverage over your search results, that is where Google comes in. With boolean search strings on Google you can search LinkedIn and other sites at the same time. Let's repeat our search for founders and owners in San Francisco, but this time let's try to find resumes that link to LinkedIn.

As you can see, Google gives us the ability to not only locate PDF files (and other file types), but we can also search based on the url contents. In the case above we filtered out any url which contained "sample" since there are an abundant number of sample resumes out there. We can take this further and search for page titles. For instance, let's say we know a prospects position and company, but we want to find their resume (maybe we are looking for a phone number). We could do something like the following:

A good reason to use Google to search across sites is that not every site has search functionality, but Google certainly does. Furthermore, Google has support for filetypes and other operators that are not supported on sites like LinkedIn.
